THE BLACK AND CLASSICAL SCHOOLS’ WORKSHOP

Beatrice performs music by Margaret Bonds and tells students of the histories and stories behind Negro Spirituals found in the music. Margaret Bonds was a black, classical female composer from 1930s Chicago who drew inspiration from Negro Spirituals for her classical works. Students experience singing negro spirituals together, learning basic jazz improvisation with Beatrice and hearing her perform.
